She has a deep interest in building human capacity and social capital, international development; participatory decision-making; and the empowerment of youth for social change. In her university days, she was heavily involved in social justice activism, advocating for the dignity of minority groups such as international students & culturally/linguistically diverse groups, women, and queer students. Now, Bernise is the founder of SYINC, which works to link up as well as build capacity among Singapore youth to engage in community-building and social change with greater effectiveness. She has since been appointed to the Advisory Board of Youth Action for Change, which works to engage youth to empower youth through ICT for positive social change. youthactionforchange.org She also serves as the National Focal Point in Singapore for the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS, involved in an initiative to build a national network of HIV/AIDS actors in Singapore. youthaidscoalition.org Most recently in Nov 2007, in recognition of her efforts, Bernise is the first Singaporean to receive the YouthActionNet Award & Fellowship from the International Youth Foundation. In her term as Global Fellow, she will be connecting with schools, NGOs, youth groups, public and private stakeholders, to further her work. Bernise is available for speaking engagements targeted at various audience demographic groups, and on a range of themes: * Youth engagement in the Millennium Development Goals * Youth action & global issues (thematic) - particularly environment/sustainable development, HIV/AIDS, gender equality * Youth engagement with UN and other international bodies * Youth action: Global to Local * Youth participation in civil society; volunteerism * Fair Trade and ethical consumption * Student representation / student leadership Previous addressees include world environment ministers, Asean-related and regional conferences, schools, regional inter-university forums, international youth conferences.
