About Me |
Okay, I haven't updated this profile in awhile, and after reading it I decided that I needed a change. Here are the vital stats:
Place of birth: Toronto, Ontario.
Current residence: Markham, Ontario (I'm about to leave Kingston for home).
Hard to say exactly how I would describe myself, although I would be inclined to say "eclectic" if I was to use a word. My interests are fairly varied, ranging from political action to the role of the arts in empowering and involving communities. I've been absolutely insane in the "busy" department this year, which has made it fairly difficult to contribute as much as I would have liked to this site. Although, now that I'm just about finished my second university degree, I'm fairly confident I can actually keep this profile up-to-date now.
How did I get involved in this project? Well, Derek Martin (another TIG member) and I met at this fabulous federal government project called FutureTrek (try saying that 10 times fast) last summer and he introduced me to it. Since then, in that strange and weird way that life manages to create opportunities when you least expect them, I had the chance to help invite Mike Furdyk and Jen Corriero to withinsight: the Canadian Post-Secondary Student Leadership Conference of which I was an Executive Member. If you want to see some pictures of them both addressing our national delegation, go to http://www.withinsight.ca and click on the pictures link.
Anyway, I'm back on-line in the world of TIG, now that my undergraduate university career is over. I'm an aspiring journalist with a focus in investigative stories and a particular interest in cultural issues, ranging from political discourse to digital fragmentation of the mass audience. I'm skilled in a range of areas, from political organization to web design, from community theatre to volunteerism. I've always been of the belief that while no one can change the world on their own, you can change yourself and be willing to lead by example. That's why I joined TIG - there's a sense of community here that goes beyond traditional definitions of the word. That's a strength of the digital domain - to reproduce discourses beyond the realm of the vernacular and into something that is continually defining and re-defining structure, form and methodology. In many ways, the Internet does more than simply provide us with email, web pages and the like - the electronic, digital nervous system we create with sites like TakingITGlobal integrates and infiltrates existing political and social structures to make them anew.
Cheers,
G.
