Peter is the new Spring 2008 intern for GYCA's New York Office.
Peter began his work organizing young people in politics, working with his peers at the University of Maine to register young voters and promote progressive causes. He continued his activism work as a Field Director for the Young Voter Alliance organizing young people for the 2004 Elections in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
While returning to school to prepare for a career in Medicine, Peter shifted his focus to health issues, particularly HIV education. In the spring of 2006, he traveled to rural northwestern Tanzania to teach young people about HIV prevention and to work with community members and conduct research to develop a sustainable public health project. The project would be a partnership between students from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and community activists in the Village of Ahkishaka. Peter returned to Tanzania with two medical students in the summer of 2007, starting an HIV Peer Education program in the local secondary school, a free condom program, and a free insecticide treated mosquito net program to combat Malaria.
Peter is currently an intern with the medical supply relief NGO Doc to Dock and is applying to medical school for the fall. He will return to Tanzania this summer to expand the peer education and anti-malaria programs, continuing his work with young people to prevent the spread of HIV.
