I realized that you cannot legislate against hatred. There is no law that you can pass that will purge it from society. Nor can you legislate against ignorance or bigotry. You cannot vote down loneliness. You cannot bring fear to negotiating table. You cannot take jealousy or agony to court and jail them away. You may take the jealous, but you will never be able to take jealousy. No executive decision can be made to wage war on sloth. No doctor can cure the plague of greed. No journalist can write a story exposing envy in all its green ugliness. No. For you, no law will stop words like “chink” from being used by children too young to know the meaning. Ironically, you can not legislate love, hand down a verdict for kindness, or make a treaty with tolerance. It’s up to leaders to promote these virtues.
A true leader is one who can, in his or her own interactions with people, combat those evils which no political or social action can wholly remove. A leader is the unstoppable force that, in backyards, at dinner parties, and on street corners, can push through immovable blockades.
