Now 25, James has been a full-time innovator, trend setter, social entrepreneur and change maker since he was 16.
Occasionally distracted by formal education, James first aspired to being a professional actor before deciding that his mission in life is to create positive social change. In 1998 James founded Tolerance in Diversity (TiD) – a youth-led anti-racism/ conflict resolution charity based in Tower Hamlets, east London. As a Peer Trainer and then Chair of TiD, James led projects challenging racism and other forms of intolerance and trained young people in conflict resolution methodologies around the world, including London, Bradford and Durban (South Africa). He was also involved in developing organisational strategy, creating partnerships, fundraising and staff/ volunteer training and management. James left TiD in 2003 and today the organisation continues to deliver its unique brand of youth empowerment through peer education in schools, communities and other youth settings.
During the same period (2001-2003), James worked as Youth Programme Coordinator with United Religions Initiative to help shape their national youth strategy and managed two local projects - a series of interfaith dinner events in London and a youth-led conference in Bradford. He also worked as a consultant to various organisations on youth engagement, helping to create relevant and accessible programmes for young people.
From 2003 to 2004, James worked as General Manager for Bigga Fish, a youth music and education company, where he managed the staff team (six members) and the organisation’s finance as well as helping to raise funds and design organisational strategy.
• In 2002/ 03 James attended the School for Social Entrepreneurs where he focussed on creating music-based youth development projects in east London, developed his ideas for Chrysalis Community, and became the youngest ever graduate of the school.
• James won the Whitbread Young Community Achiever Award in 2003 for his work with Tolerance in Diversity and the United Religions Initiative.
He has also attended several international events for young leaders, including:
• World Youth Forum Against Racism - Hanover, Germany, 1999
• International Youth Parliament – Sydney, Australia, 2000 (participant) and 2004 (facilitator)
• Make Our World – Los Angeles, USA, 2000
• UN World Conference Against Racism (inc Youth Forum and NGO Forum) – Durban, South Africa, 2001
• YES! World Youth Jam – San Francisco, USA, 2002
• 5th World Social Forum – Porto Alegre, Brazil, 2005
James is currently founder and CEO of Chrysalis Academy for Social Entrepreneurs; an organisation dedicated to identifying, encouraging and supporting emerging young social change leaders around the world, with a focus on the UK and Brazil. Chrysalis Academy's vision is to create a holistic leadership development curriculum and leadership Academy in London, UK.
James continues to be an inspirational leader for social change and is a sought-after speaker and trainer as well as freelance journalist for several UK and international publications.
