About Me   About Me
Aleza is the Project Officer at the Global Coalition for HIV/AIDS, where she began working in March 2007. Specifically, she supports GYCA’s network of Regional and National Focal Points, developing materials for local organizing on topics ranging from youth-friendly health services to World AIDS Day organizing. She is also responsible for coordinating follow up on the Youth-Adult Commitments Desk, GYCA’s new small grants program, the “Youth Awake” newsletter and other projects. She is a co-chair of the Mexico Youth Force Pre-Conference subcommittee and a member of the Youth Working Group for AIDS2008.

Aleza’s interest in global politics and issues of gender and sexuality go back to her high school and college years. In high school, she was a leader of both the Gay/Straight Alliance and the feminist student group. She continued this work at Tufts University, where she was active with the Tufts Feminist Alliance, the Tufts Coalition for Social Justice and Nonviolence, and Radix, Tufts’ journal of progressive and radical thought. Aleza spent her third year of university abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and has also lived and traveled in Israel, Ecuador, and Central America. She graduated in 2003 from Tufts University with a degree in International Letters and Visual Studies, with a particular focus on Latin America.

Aleza has lived in New York since 2003, when she began working at the American Jewish World Service, which funds grassroots organizations in the developing world, including many groups working on community-based responses to HIV/AIDS and youth organizations. During the three years she spent at working at AJWS, she developed educational materials about global issues, including HIV/AIDS, poverty, and women's empowerment, for synagogues, schools, and Jewish community settings. As well, she organized service-learning programs that brought North American college students to Central America to learn about the work that organizations were doing to make change in their communities and inspire the U.S. students to work for global justice.

Currently, Aleza lives in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, NY. Outside of work, she works with local groups on issues of housing, sexual and reproductive health, anti-war organizing, and other topics. She is particularly interested in creating radical Jewish culture and community and in the juncture of art and social change.
