About Me |
Luis is a strong believer on the power that active youth can have in their communities, by becoming engaged, organized and motivated. He has become an advocate for creating safe spaces for youth participation at all levels of decision-making and has addressed dozens of international events on the subject. He has also worked with governments such as the regional government of Nuevo Leon in Mexico and the National Assembly of Wales, non-governmental organizations such as the Open Society Institute (OSI), and UN agencies such as the UNDP Regional Center in Bangkok and UNDP Guyana, building capacity and fostering networking and collaboration among youth and youth organizations.
Luis is currently the Hispanic Initiative Director at Junior Achievement of New York (JANY). He is responsible for initiating, planning and driving a targeted volunteer recruitment campaign to increase JANY’s impact and reach to first generation Hispanic students in New York City and Long Island. The campaign includes recruitment of Hispanic business and community role models/mentors to volunteer-teach the JA financial literacy, business skills and work force preparedness skills-based curriculum in schools with significant Hispanic student populations. An additional focus is placed on the importance of bilingualism, the importance of staying in school, and the family as an economic unit.
Luis was previously the Associate Director for the Global Youth Action Network (GYAN) at its headquarters in New York City. He was responsible for GYAN’s programmatic and regional/national engagement, as well as staff management at GYAN HQ. Luis was also the international co-coordinator for Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), the largest celebration of youth volunteers in the world.
Luis was also previously responsible for maintaining GYAN’s relationship with the UN system.
Luis is a co-founder and taskforce member of the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA), the UNAIDS and UNFPA-supported alliance seeking to empower young people in their battle against HIV/AIDS through comprehensive networking and knowledge sharing, advocacy, capacity-building and youth involvement at international conferences.
Luis was born in Venezuela and lived in the Netherlands Antilles for 5 years. He has a BS (Cum Laude) in Diplomacy and International Relations from Seton Hall University (USA), and graduate coursework from the University of Ghent (Belgium), Charles University (Czech Republic) and the University of Bolzano (Italy). He also a certificate in Leadership, Democracy and Social Development from the Inter-American Institute for Social Development (INDES) at the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB).
Luis is currently fluent in English, Spanish and Papiamento and has a good understanding of Italian, Portuguese, French and Dutch.
