He is also a writer of everything from children’s books to satirical columns and articles. His works has led him increasingly to the conviction that the solution to many development problems lies in an integrated and resourced based approach to the capacity development and empowerment of young people, based on their own participation and protection. Such an effort, Henry believes, would have gone far to arrest the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic that continues to cut a fatal, but largely preventable swathe through a whole cohort of youth in Africa and across the world. Such approach would enable the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. UNICEF, Speak Africa Challenge Award winner, Henry Ekwuruke is a Unite For Sight International Humanitarian Award Winner, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) recipient and World Bank Institute and United Nations Institute for Training and Research, (UNITAR) Geneva alumini. Henry is also the Programme Coordinator of Student Participation Empowerment And Knowledge initiative (SPEAKi) a project, dedicated to giving students voice, empowerment and skills; and a member of the Project Advisory Committee of Creating Local Connections – West Africa. Henry is a Volunteer Editor here in TakingITGlobal.org, dedicated to Articles Review and Publication, and Editing of website generally! I was raised on optimism by my parents on the belief in the certainty that Nigerians were destined for a good life, being one of the richest countries in Africa. I grew up to see orphanages, to see villages of graves, read reports, meet with and work with people all over Nigeria and Africa, whose lives and futures have been truned upside down - and one day, I stopped! Sometimes, someday in our lives, we have to stop and reassess the situation and beging to think. Ask this question: Am I doing anything to change this reality? This question should start ringing on our ears. And this is what I have come to believe: This is not our inevitable future. This is a battle for our nation's survival and true transformation. We carry inside, each and every one of us, the potential to increase the problem or the potential and talent to help solve the problem. This is not a policy issue (Pamela my friend, take note!), this is ourselves, our families, our communities, our hopes, our future. And this is our decisive moment, because we are the first generation that can end poverty and we collectively refuse to miss this historic opportunity. And because accountability counts, we recognize it's our world and our future where no president, no leader, no king, no emperor...nobody's going to change this, except the people, powered by youth! My mentor, Alh. Maitama Sule will always say that leadership is the issue." Professor Chinua Achebe and President Madela believe "the centre can hold with accounability" and I believe with President Musa Yar'Adua of Nigeria that achieving the Millennium Development Goals is our sacred duty."
