Fresh air impoverishes the doctor. - Danish Proverb A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings, and learn how by his thought to derive benefit from his illnesses. - Hippocrates Fools!! not to know how better for the soul, An honest half than an ill-gotten whole ; How richer he who dines on herbs with health Of heart, than knaves with all their wines and wealth. - Hesiod The soul which has no fixed purpose in life is lost; to be everywhere is to be nowhere. - Michel de Montaigne. My Goals for the Coming Year I'm trying to eat healthier, including lots of vegetable soups. I'm also trying to eat lower glycemic index foods. When I do that I not only lose weight but I feel like I'm thinking clearer, too. I'd like to improve my memory and brainpower. I've been reading books on how to do that. Some of the suggestions I've read about include: Getting more sleep. This is supposed to be good for your brain and your weight. I guess people eat more when they are hungry. I really have to work on this goal. I've always been a night owl. Getting more exercise. I go in cycles on getting exercise. Lately I've spent too much time on the PC. I'm trying to take frequent breaks to fit in more exercise each day. Reading a lot. According to a paper in the Cambridge Handbook of Expertise and Expert Performance, people who know a lot generally read a lot. I think that is true. I love to read. I would read a book a day if I had the time, but unfortunately I have to many work and family obligations. I do, however, try to read at least a book a week. I read mostly nonfiction. The only problem is that I get so many good ideas from the books that I read that I don't have time to implement them all. Playing ping-pong. I've read this can improve your thinking but I'm not sure. So far all I've done is watch the ping-pong movie Balls of Fury. (It got bad reviews it probably deserved, but my kids thought is was a hoot.) I'd like to get a ping-pong table, but no one else in my family wants one. We had a foosball table for a while, but that ended up getting used for about a month and then getting sold. Learning to play a musical instrument. I've never played a musical instrument in my life, but for some reason this interests me now. I'd like to learn to play something like the piano, guitar or drums. We went to a Christmas party last week and the entertainment was having the hosts and the guests play Christmas and other songs. Some of the people were clearly amateurs, but the talent of some of the people - especially the kids - was mind-boggling. There was one child at the party who could play classical music like a concert pianist.
