Joya Banerjee, 26, is the Co-Founder and Program Coordinator of the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS, (GYCA), a youth-led, UNFPA and UNAIDS-supported international network of
over 4000 young people addressing HIV/AIDS in 150 countries worldwide. Joya graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University cum laude in 2004 with a double major in Human Rights and Political Science. She wrote her senior thesis on the Feminization of HIV/AIDS in India. Joya will be enrolling in the Harvard School of Public Health in the department of Population and International Health in the fall of 2008.

Joya's interest in international development, gender and human rights began during an internship for Amnesty International's Women's Human Rights Program for two years. Her experiences led her to start a student organization on HIV/AIDS and health as a human right called Columbia Global Justice, a chapter of the Student Global AIDS Campaign, under the mentorship of the Earth Institute at Columbia University headed by Jeffrey Sachs. Joya worked at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) as a consultant, helping to develop the Special Youth Programme in the Reproductive Health Branch for young fellows from developing countries, and launching GYCA with the support of the HIV/AIDS Branch. In 2005 GYCA went independent, and now has offices in New York and Accra, Ghana. Joya's work has taken her to every continent, and is focused on empowering young leaders with knowledge, skills, resources and opportunities they need to end the spread of HIV and AIDS.

Joya is an Oxfam International Youth Partnerships HIV/AIDS Action Partner (2004). She has advocated at the 2005 and 2006 United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS, and at the 2005 International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa, in Abuja, Nigeria. She was one of the key organizers of the Toronto YouthForce at the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Canada, 2006. Joya also participated in the World Health Organization and UNICEF Global Consultation on Youth Living with HIV in Blantyre, Malawi, and the UNICEF Technical Support Group on Most-At-Risk Adolescents in 2006, in Kyiv, Ukraine and Hanoi, Vietnam. She has organized numerous trainings and events in the US and internationally.
