 About Me |
Lia De Pauw is a public health specialist committed to creating a world in which children and young people grow up healthy, happy, and fulfilled. She has worked with health regions, community-based organizations, and international non-governmental organizations to address young people’s health and well-being in Canada and around the world. Lia integrates her commitment to social justice in her work, examining and addressing the impact of social inequity in children and young people’s lives.
Among other organizations, Lia has worked with Plan Canada (www.plancanada.ca) on comprehensive child-centred, rights-based responses to HIV in the developing world; the Inter-Agency Coalition on AIDS and Development (www.icad-cisd.com) to provide interactive tools for engaging Canadians in the global HIV response; the AIDS 2006 Local Host (www.aids2006.org) to engage communities affected by HIV in the XVI International AIDS Conference through the Cultural Activities Programme, Global Village, and Youth Programme; Connect to Youth (www.connecttoyouth.org) to create more empowering environments for young people in the child welfare system; and Condomania (www.planetahead.ca) to promote healthy adolescent sexuality.
Lia De Pauw uses Freirian critical pedagogy to engage communities in identifying and transforming local and global social issues. She sums up her approach through the motto: ENGAGE the mind, body, and heart • PROVOKE curiosity about self and world • EXPLORE complex social and personal issues • INGITE positive change! Lia believes that youth voice and action are necessary for meaningful community development and social change. In recent years, she has experimented with liberating her inner artist and dabbling in arts-based facilitation techniques, including forum theatre, as a means to addressing complex issues.
Lia is currently completing a Master of Health Sciences in Health Promotion at the University of Toronto and working with the Connect to Youth Project (www.connecttoyouth.org). She holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Family and Social Relations from the University of Guelph. Lia has participated in trainings on nonformal education, arts-based facilitation, counseling, policy development, media advocacy, and participatory research and evaluation.
