About Me |
Hi everyone. I am 19 years old and a first year film and political science student at Carleton University in Ottawa, originally from St. Catharines, Ontario. I am the Ottawa Youth Engagement Coordinator for Creating local Connections Canada, a project of TakingITGlobal. In a volunteer capacity I am also one of the Youth Engagement coordinators for Amnesty International Canada, my files are Malysia and Singapore. In both of my positions I do a lot of work with youth between the ages of 12 and 25 in the areas of education about issues and capacity building. I specifically do a lot of work in building online networks that are sustainable and teaching activists how to use various web 2.0 tools to aid in their work.
I started my global involvement about 7 years ago after reading an article about the Chinese occupation of Tibet in a skateboard magazine of all places and my interest has grown through my involvement in Model United Nations, Free Tibet, Amnesty International and other organizations. Currently my main focuses of interest and research are ethnic conflict in Northern Ireland and general arms control. Did you know that it is cheaper to buy an AK-47 in Kenya than it is to buy a cow to feed one's family?
I am also interested in film. Currently I have about 3 scripts on the go and though I am mostly an editor, I am preparing to go into pre-production on my first feature length film, "Burning Sunset" a dark romance musical. Hopefully I will get it finished before the Colorado Independent Film Festival. Music plays a central role in my films because I appreciate the way that it can convey emotion without anyone actually having to say the words. Some of my favorite bands are Joy Division, +44, Nizlopi, Damien Rice, Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova, Bell x1 and Matthew Good, but I generally listen to Brit/Irish acoustic artists.
