About Me

I am the Program Director of the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA), a youth-led international network of over 4,400 members in 150 countries. Previously, I served for two years as the Associate in the Women's Rights Division of Human Rights Watch where I assisted with research on PMTCT programs in Nigeria and Asian migrant domestic workers within Asia and the Middle East, and with advocacy projects at the UN Human Rights Council.

My interest in social justice activities began at an early age when I started volunteering for the American Civil Liberties Union in Arkansas and Texas, the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, and later NARAL - Pro-Choice Texas. Then during my gap year between high school and university I joined the staffs of two organizations in Texas: Whole Woman's Health, a women's health clinic, and Jane's Due Process, a legal and political advocacy organization for pregnant teenagers.

After a year out of school, I missed the energy and excitement of the classroom so I enrolled in Barnard College of Columbia University where I majored in Women's Studies and Human Rights Studies. Research for my senior thesis brought me to Arusha, Tanzania, the site of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which, instead of solidifying my commitment to transitional justice issues, rekindled my early interest in sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Soy Directora de Programa de la Coalición Global de Jóvenes Contra el VIH/SIDA (GYCA), una red internacional liderada por jóvenes de más de 4,400 miembros en 150 países. Anteriormente, fui la Socia en la División de Derechos de Mujeres de Human Rights Watch donde ayude con la investigación sobre programas de PMTCT en Nigeria y sobre asiáticos trabajadores domésticos migrantes en Asia y el Medio Oriente, y con proyectos de incidencia política dirigidos al Consejo de los Derechos Humanos de la ONU.

Mí interés por las actividades de justicia social comenzaron a temprana edad cuando empecé el voluntariado con la Unión Americana de Libertades Civiles en Arkansas y Texas, el National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (Coalición Nacional para Abolir la Pena de Muerte), y después NARAL – Pro-Choice Texas. Luego, durante el año entre la secundaria y la universidad me incorporé al personal de dos organizaciones en Texas: Whole Women's Health, una clínica de salud de la mujer, y Jane's Due Process, una organización de defensa política y jurídica para adolescentes embarazadas.

Después de un año fuera de la escuela, extrañaba la energía y la emoción que se encontraba en la sala de clase, pues me inscribí en la Escuela de Barnard de la Universidad de Columbia, donde especialicé en Estudios de la Mujer y Estudios de Derechos Humanos. La investigación para mi tesis me llevó a Arusha, Tanzania, el sitio del Tribunal Penal Internacional para Ruanda, que, en vez de solidificar mi compromiso con las cuestiones de justicia de transición, reavivó mi interés en derechos y salud sexual y reproductiva.
