About Me |
I am Sudyumna Dahal. I was born in Nepal, but grew up in Hong Kong. Since, early childhood, I had been involved in various humanitarian works such as fundraisings for earthquake and flood victims. Having been inclined to serve my motherland, I returned to Nepal against the tide, instead of staying in Hong Kong. Upon discovering such a course as Development Studies being offered, I pursued it, realizing that such knowledge is exactly what is needed and what is lacking in Nepal. Having thus, reached a turning point in my pursuits, career and ideology, reached out for various voluntary and non-voluntary activities in the development field. During this course, I had the opportunity to travel, explore and study various rural areas, settlements, various prevalent issues and the problems faced in each. Later on, as the president of the Development Studies Society (DevS Society, Nepal) I was responsible for various charitable activities such as blood-donation programmes and fundraising activities for Safe Motherhood Network and for AIDS victims.
Among the various activities that I have undertaken, one of most important works that I have been involved in is the research based activism against brick factories that are illegal, uncontrolled, unsupervised and extremely hazardous to health, environment and a defective judicial system in Nepal that are in breach of human rights of the local people. During this process, I was involved in conducting various researches, disseminating reports and information, conducting dialogues and talk-programmes.
I had also been involved in similar voluntary and non-voluntary work in the campaign for the human rights and environmental concerns in the Melamchi Drinking Water Supply Project.
As an employee of WAFED, Nepal, an organisation involved in advocacy to secure the human rights, environment and development in Nepal, I conducted various studies and researches regarding foreign aid scenario in Nepal for UNRISD and Action Aid Alliance.
As a member of Youth Initiative, Nepal, a leading NGO and the secretariat for the YES Country Network, Nepal, I was associated with activities regarding civic concerns, youth politics, environmental awareness and other research activities.
