About Me

Sydney Hushie, 23, has been a youth advocate for HIV/AIDS in Ghana for nine years. Sydney is currently the Project Officer for GYCA Southern Secretariat. Sydney's first experiece with youth advocacy was with a youth media advocacy organisation in the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, (Children and Youth In Broadcasting-Curious Minds) where he is a Radio/TV presenter and holds radio/TV talk shows to increase national youth awareness on HIV/AIDS. He is also a member of the editorial team of the youth magazine ‘GHAYA, published by UNFPA Ghana. He is a regular contributor to the magazine.

Sydney advocates for reproductive health rights for young people with policy makers in Ghana and beyond. Sydney is a youth leader in Ghana, and through interaction with ministers of state and parliamentarians has influenced a number of policies on children and young people in Ghana. Sydney headed a team of young people in Ghana to evaluate the African Youth Alliance/UNFPA project in Ghana.

Sydney is currently a member of a committee to start a national youth network on Population and Development in Ghana. Sydney is also a Task Force Member and Ghana National Focal Point for the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS. Sydney led a group of young people in Ghana to review government commitments to UNGASS on HIV/AIDS for GYCA, after which the "Ghana Youth Shadow Report on UNGASS on HIV/AIDS" was drafted.

Sydney has presented papers on the rights of children and youth through various international platforms. Sydney participated in the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Abuja, Nigeria in December 2005, and the 2006 International AIDS Conference in Toronto, where he worked with other young leaders in HIV/AIDS to advocate for increased political commitment and resources for HIV/AIDS interventions for and with youth. Sydney has participated in a number of world media summits for adolescents. He has facilitated and organised trainings for UNFPA, British Council, the World Bank among others.

Sydney is on contract with British Council Ghana to work on a project with 20 youth organisations on the MDGs and Poverty Reduction Strategies of Ghana, as well as building their organizational capacity on community development and advocacy. This role brings Sydney directly in contact with grass root youth.

Sydney's work as GYCA SS project Officer includes coordinating mapping activites, mobilising support for GYCA members to attend international AIDS conferences, assist in mobilising funds for RFPs and NFPs, coordinating articles for a south specific Newsletter in the global south.
